Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House Expands Brewing Team

Following the appointment of Peter Wiens as inaugural Brewmaster at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House, we’re proud to profile two other senior brewers who have since joined our team at the new Guinness brewery just outside Baltimore, MD.

We’re delighted to announce Hollie Stephenson as Head Brewer, reporting into Peter Wiens.

Hollie was a colleague of Peter’s at Stone Brewing Co. in Escondido, but most recently was Brewmaster at Highland Brewing Co in Asheville, North Carolina.  At Highland, Hollie was instrumental in expanding the brewery’s portfolio, introducing new beers to the brewery’s core line-up as well as limited releases and taproom-only beers.

Originally from Georgia, Hollie studied in Washington DC where she initially began her career as a lobbyist working for not-for-profit organizations.  After getting bitten by the beer bug and stints living in Southern California and North Carolina, Hollie is excited to be living in the Baltimore-DC area once more.

Hollie will be responsible for managing the brewing team as well as most of the scheduling and operations at the new brewery.  She will also be heavily involved in recipe development and the creative thinking behind the new Guinness beers being produced at the site.

We’re also very pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Brennan as Senior Brewer, reporting into Hollie Stephenson.

Sean has spent most of his career to date at Northern United Brewing Co, most famous outside Michigan for the Jolly Pumpkin brand.  As Head Of Production, Sean was responsible for scheduling and managing the brewing of Northern United’s clean and barrel-aged beers.  Sean has plenty of experience with fermenting and aging beer in various different wooden vessels, and in blending beer to produce exciting but balanced flavors and aromas.

Look out for more brewing appointments as we build out our 10 barrel and 100 hectoliter brewing systems.
