Guinness has collaborated with lauded local coffee roaster, Vent Coffee Roasters, to brew a one-off coffee beer for the upcoming Uppers & Downers festival being held in Chicago this Saturday, February 24th.

The festival, created and hosted by Good Beer Hunting, the beer writing, events and strategy organization supported by Guinness, is the foremost joint celebration of great coffee and great beer in the world.  Now in its third year, Uppers & Downers will feature cutting edge coffee and beer collaborations from over 20 world-class breweries and roasters.

Our head brewer, Hollie Stephenson, was excited to work with Sarah Walker, the uber-passionate founder of Vent Coffee Roasters in Downtown Baltimore, to come up with something new and interesting for the festival.  The result is a Belgian tripel-style beer, made with cascara and coffee beans from Vent.

“This one was so much fun – a true collaboration with another passionate maker,” Hollie Stephenson said.  “Sarah [Walker] had the idea of using cascara, the fruit that surrounds the coffee bean, and as soon as I tried it I knew an estery Belgian-inspired tripel would perfectly showcase the tart cherry and tobacco flavors. The finished beer has noticeable coffee character, but it’s led by the ripe fruit and tobacco aromas of the cascara.  And it’s delicious.”

Sarah Walker from Vent Coffee Roasters commented, “Vent Coffee Roasters is honored to be a part of this collaboration and look forward to a growing friendship with Guinness.”

If you can’t make it to Chicago for the festival, keep your eyes peeled for future potential collaborations.  And in the meanwhile, come to the Test Taproom for experimental Guinness beers designed by Hollie or visit Vent for fantastic locally roasted coffee.
